It’s like, when you tune your antennae in on something specific you start to see things you might have previously missed. Not that it’s really possible to miss the bright yellow Dorje Ling Buddhist Temple in DUMBO/Vinegar Hill, but you’d be surprised at what slips by unseen.
Occupying what used to be a used car lot, the Dorje Ling Buddhist Temple serves as the spiritual meeting place for the Jonangpa community, so named after the Jonang retreat center in central Tibet. Under the tutelage of Tulku Tashi Gyaltsan Rinpoche, the Jonangpa have as their central text the Kalachakra Tantra, which as far as the lay person need be concerned, deals with some of the most fantastic Vajrayana teachings out there. Deity visualization, orgasm, and the Six Yogas—which in and of itself is amazing—are, in addition to a number of other subjects, all covered in five fascinating chapters.
The center is open for weekly practice sessions, workshops, and “empowerment ceremonies,” where teachings are given in both English and Chinese. Teachings are ongoing and include discourse on Green Tara Practice, Kalachakra Deity Meditation, Vajrayogini Meditative Visualizations, and Achieving Realizations in the Bardo. Recently there have been a number of Western practitioners initiated into preliminary practices of the system, though don’t expect to get into some 200-hour teacher training program and be done with it. Taking up the Kalachakra Tantra means getting into it for the long haul.
